On Oct 12 (Sun), a total of 28 people — 21 students of the special Japanese class, teachers, and IIA staff — visited the Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel (in Kasukabe City, Saitama Pref.) and the Tsukuba Expo Center. At the facility, also known as the “Disaster Prevention Underground Shrine,” participants learned how this huge underground floodwater-diversion facility helps reduce flood damage in Tokyo, and were impressed by its enormous scale and ingenious structure. They also visited the Tsukuba Expo Center, built on the former site of the Expo held 40 years ago, where they enjoyed hands-on experiences by actually seeing and touching.
